As in any aquaculture industry, fish farmers in Canada face various fish health challenges which they must overcome to produce healthy and sustainable seafood. An overview of the major fish health challenges in Canadian aquaculture as well as the management strategies employed to address these challenges will be presented. There will be a focus on the British Columbia salmon industry and the Ontario trout industry.

Presentation Learning Objectives :

  1. To gain an understanding of the fish health challenges faced by Canadian fish farmers.
  2. To understand some fish health management strategies commonly used in commercial aquaculture.
  3. To appreciate the role of veterinarians and fish health professionals in commercial aquaculture.

 

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Mykolas Kamaitis is a private practice aquaculture veterinarian and owner of Belwood Lake Veterinary Services, working with fish farmers in Ontario, Canada. He previously worked in the British Columbia salmon industry as a veterinarian and Fish Health Manager with Mowi Canada West. During his time at Mowi Myk developed a strong background in production medicine and continues to take a preventative and production-focused approach to fish health management. Myk has served as the president of the Association of Aquaculture Veterinarians of British Columbia (AAVBC) since 2018.
