More about this event

Synopsis:

Ecovars of M. ulcerans were considered endemic to specific continents or hosts, but we provide evidence for translocation and host shift.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the geographic distribution of Buruli Ulcer
  2. Understand the molecular etiology of this disease in a range of vertebrate hosts
  3. Understand the risk factors and prospective treatment options available for mycobacterioses

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Sandel is an ichthyologist with a recent focus on mycobacterial pathogenesis. His graduate research at the University of Alabama focused on molecular evolution of fishes, and his post-doctoral training focused on comparative genomics and public health. As faculty at Mississippi State, he is funded to identify aquatic reservoirs of Mycobacterium ulcerans in North and South America. He now applies skills acquired through doctoral and post-doctoral training to a public health challenge under the One Health concept.
