Presentation Synopsis:

Aquaculture production of mussels in the EU peaked in the late ‘90s; then by 2016 the volume had dropped by 20%. Diseases represent a serious threat to the maintenance and growth of mussels cultivation.  This presentation will cover mussel (M. galloprovincialis) normal histology and histopathology. Topic will include: how to perform samples collection for DNA based diagnosis and light and electron microscopy; biological agents of mussels (viral, bacterial, parasitic), related lesions and neoplastic disorders.

Speaker Bio:

Francesca Carella is an Associate Professor of Veterinary Anatomic Pathology, Department of Biology of the University of Naples Federico II. Her expertise is the Comparative pathology of aquatic animals. The study of invertebrate pathology it’s her main current focus. The used approach is to link individual impacts of disease at population level, using histopathology, ultrastructure, experimental challenges, and statistical modelling in aquatic animals. Specialist in taxonomy and ecology of parasites in fish, shellfish and Corals. She works on Molluscs O.I.E listed pathogens.
