A description of how Indian Ocean aquaculture industry was developed during these last 25 years will be presented, emphasizing specific constraints and challenges to achieve such success in developing countries with very limited logistics and energy access. Long term vision and ethics are required to survive climatic, political and sanitary crisis occurring during that journey, and to demonstrate that it can become a sustainable industry, providing stable incomes to local communities. A roadmap towards future challenges for aquaculture in this region of the World will then be presented.

Presentation Learning Objectives:

  1. To understand the economic impact of infectious diseases and Mass Mortality Events.
  2. To understand the importance of a long-term vision to face a number of critical scenarios.
  3. To understand the benefits of an integrated public-private plan for an efficient sanitary response.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Marc le Groumellec is a veterinarian, PhD in Aquaculture and Pathology. With an outstanding career from IFREMER in Tahiti, French Polynesia, dealing with various species of shrimp, fish, and molluscs, to the private sector in Mexico and Madagascar.  In Madagascar – at Aqualma- he has been involved in fundamental aspects to develop the first industrial scaled P. monodon Domestication Centre focusing on biosecurity tools through all the value chain.  Dr. Le Groumellec is an expert contributing to the ad hoc group on Aquatic Animal Biosecurity at OIE (World Animal Health Organization).
