This presentation will be a general introduction to pinniped anatomy and pathology. In the first section, we will cover some of the anatomical peculiarities of these species and physiological adaptations to the aquatic environment. In the second half of the talk, we will look at selected pathologies seen in these species.

Presentation Learning Objectives:

  1. To recognize the anatomical differences between pinnipeds and terrestrial mammals
  2. Understand some of the physiological adaptations to their aquatic lifestyle
  3. Become familiar with the important and emerging pathologies of pinnipeds

Johanna Baily is a lecturer in Aquatic Pathology at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, Scotland. She is a European board-certified veterinary pathologist with a PhD focused on the pathology of Scottish grey seals and her current research focuses on infectious disease within aquatic ecosystems, whether in mussels, fish or marine mammals. She is also Programme Director for Stirling’s Aquatic Pathobiology and Aquatic Veterinary Studies MSc courses.
