Want to be recognised for your expertise?

Do you want to be recognised for your Aquatic Veterinary Medicine skills? Do you want to be certified in Aquatic Veterinary Medicine, and able to demonstrate your expertise to prospective employers or clients?

WAVMA currently offers two self study, peer reviewed certificates, the Certified Aquatic Veterinarian (CertAqV) for licenced veterinarians, and the Certified Aquatic Veterinary Nurse/Technician (CertAqVNT) for Veterinary Nurses/Technicians. Both are globally recognised and demonstrate you have the necessary skills for a career in Aquatic Veterinary Medicine.

You must be a member of WAVMA to sign up for the Certificate and maintain your WAVMA membership to continue using the honorific after your name. There is also a requirement that you reapply for the Certificate every five years.

Students can apply but will not recieve the award until they have completed their degree. Given the time limit on gaining the award it is advisable that you only apply in your final year. You can gain KSE before applying.

You will need to provide evidence of your veterinary qualification to complete the process, which is carried out online via a tab in your member profile. You can speak to a mentor prior to signing up, to see what areas you may need to work on, and if it is reasonable for you to complete the process in the time allowed. All those listed as CertAqV on the appropriate page can act as mentors for both Certificates. Those listed as CertAqVNT can only act as mentors for CertAqVNT. Contact details can be found in the members Online Directory (you need to be signed in to your membership) or via the Awards tab in your member profile (once signed up for either Certificate).

For full information please click on the links, CertAqV and CertAqVNT and read the information provided.

The links on both these pages provide a downloadable handbook providing full information, a summary overview of the process, suggested learning resources usable for both the CertAqV and CertAqVNT for study,  and examples of completed forms such as case reports and KSE Credit.

Highlights include:

  • Covers the nine key areas requried for a veterinarian to treat aquatic animals, and the eight key areas required for a veterinary nurse/technician to care for aquatic animals.
  • Study at your own pace, you have one year to complete the certificate and can use previous skills gained towards your Knowledge, Skills, Experience credits.
  • You can speak to a mentor before signing up and will have a mentor to guide you through the process.
  • Work whilst you study for the certificate.
