The externship will provide opportunities to assist with spawning efforts, broodstock surveillance sampling, field necropsies, clinical case workups, lab test selection, biosecurity audits, and development of treatment and disease management strategies at state, federal, county, tribal, or independently operated fish hatcheries. Other topics include review of fish husbandry, welfare, use of drugs pertaining to minor food species, policies, and major pathogens that affect wild and captive coldwater finfish (mainly Chinook, steelhead, trout, and other salmonids) in the region.
Aquaculture
4th year veterinary student at the time of the externship
Selection will be dependent on the student’s commitment to aquaculture medicine. Up to three applicants will be chosen to participate in a two week externship during the late summer and fall (August through late October) each calendar year.
Veterinary students who wish to apply to the program are expected to send a CV and/or resume, cover letter, and list of three references to the PNSVEP program coordinator by July 1st the year prior to their anticipated 4th year rotation.
For example, those wishing to participate in fall of 2024 would submit all application materials by July 1st, 2023.
