Adventure Aquarium offers 3rd and 4th year veterinary students an immersive opportunity in aquatic medicine through a 4-week externship program. Students will work alongside the staff veterinarian, veterinary technician and husbandry staff while rotating through Animal Health, Fish and Invertebrates, Birds and Mammals, and Water Quality teams. Clinical cases may involve elasmobranchs, fish, sea turtles, penguins, hippos and many more! Students are required to complete a short research project, in-depth topical literature review, or retrospective case analysis followed by a Powerpoint presentation to the Husbandry team. Externships are available June through September. Proof of health insurance, drug screen and background check are required prior to starting the rotation.
Adventure Aquarium displays a diverse collection of elasmobranchs, fish, penguins and other birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals including our two hippos.
The externship is open to 3rd or 4th year veterinary students in their final clinical years with an interest in aquatic animal medicine.
