The Wildlife Conservation Society Aquatic Animal Health Department provides medical, surgical, and pathology services for the New York Aquarium. The clinical caseload varies providing the student with broad exposure to aquatic animal medicine. The student's responsibilities will include morning review of cases and assisting the veterinarians with medical and surgical cases and daily park rounds. The student will also spend time with the Water Quality and Animal Care teams, learning about water quality, life support systems, and husbandry. The student will also be required to give a presentation on some aspect of aquatic medicine.

Requirements:- Be in your Junior year of veterinary school applying for rotations in your senior year.- Be eligible to work in the United States.- Commit to 5 days per week for 4 weeks. Only in special cases can we accommodate students for shorter or longer periods.- Show interest in aquatic, zoological, wildlife, or conservation medicine in your career.- Provide own housing and transportation.- Provide own pants/shorts, boots or work shoes; scrub tops will be provided. - To fully participate in our program, once accepted, students must provide proof of health insurance, current negative TB test, and proof of current tetanus, rabies, and COVID-19 vaccination.
Externships last three to eight weeks (preferably four) during the student's senior/clinical year.
Housing is not provided. Accepted students who have questions about which neighborhoods are convenient to the zoo can reach out to the program administrator for suggestions.
No stipend is provided.
Applications are accepted for clinical year externships from July 1st through November 15th of your JUNIOR year. Electronic material must be received by 11:59 pm on November 15th. Mailed application materials must be postmarked by November 15th.

These applications will then be reviewed and students will be notified of the results usually by the end of December. Due to the great interest in the program, applications cannot be accepted or processed at other times.
