The application deadline has now passed for this externship
Location: Eagle, Cook, Kirkland, Olympia, Spokane, & Wenatchee , WA and ID , United States
Application Deadline: Jul-01-2023
Aquaculture medicine remains an underserved and largely-unknown specialty within the scope of veterinary practice. Only a small number of veterinary schools incorporate fish health classes into their core curriculums and fewer still offer insight into herd health management of aquatic species for production (human consumption) and/or mitigation (wildlife supplementation) purposes. This program was created in the hopes of exposing veterinary students, those who have a proven and focused interest in the field, to a variety of salmon and trout hatcheries, natural resource agencies, and aquatic health professionals within the Pacific Northwest.
Chinook salmon, coho salmon, steelhead, rainbow trout, white sturgeon, kokanee
Students should have a proven and focused interest in aquaculture. They should participate during their 4th year of veterinary school. Those selected must arrange travel logistics, including housing and transportation (personal or rental car).
Three applicants will be chosen to participate in a 2 week externship during the late summer and fall (August through late October) per calendar year. Once selected and availability confirmed, students are expected to tend to travel logistics.
Housing is available
Some meal/per diem will be provided at certain locations.
Early applications welcome. Submit CV and/or resume, a cover letter, how many weeks and dates of availability, and a list of 3 references to Dr. Bamberger by July 1 of the year preceding the externship (e.g. July 1, 2023 for a 2024 externship).
