Program Description

The Marine Mammal Center veterinary externship program provides veterinary students in their final/clinical year/s of veterinary school, the opportunity to gain exposure to marine mammal medicine and rehabilitation in 3-4 week externships. Under the direct supervision of veterinary staff and volunteers, students will participate in animal husbandry, stranding response, daily clinical rounds, recordkeeping, veterinary diagnostics, surgical and anesthetic procedures, and necropsies. The student will complete a project during the externship and present the results to the staff and volunteers during the last week of their rotation.

Located in Sausalito, California TMMC is in the forefront of marine mammal rehabilitation and research. Work is very seasonal, with more animals in the spring and summer. Externs will work with the veterinary staff 3-4 days per week doing basic husbandry and feeding once or twice a week.

Each extern is scheduled for a 4-week block between March 15 and September 15th of each year.

Public transportation is difficult and a car is recommended for visting beautiful coastal beachs and hiking locations. 

Animals Typically Seen at Organization, Institution or Clinic

Whales, dolphins and oher marine mammals.

Knowledge or Experience Required

The veterinary externship program is only open to students who will be in their final/clinical year of veterinary studies at the time of their stay at The Marine Mammal Center. Priority for preferred externship dates are determined according to rank during the selection process. Ranking is based on the above criteria, and a demonstrated interest in marine mammal medicine.

Students will be notified of their acceptance into the 2016 program by February 13, 2015.

Accommodation / Housing

Shared housing is available at $100/week at the TMMC Guest House at the Marin Headlands (walking distance to TMMC); Housing may be provided for veterinary externs & interns at one of the old fort houses nearby.

Financial Assistance

Externships are unpaid positions.

Students will be notified of their acceptance into the 2016 program by February 13, 2015.
