WAVMA E-news August 2022-1

WAVMA has relaunched its E-news system and here is the information you need to maximize the benefit from it and also how you can contribute. There is also an example of what an E-news content might look like.

The Mission and Objectives of WAVMA are:

The Mission of the Association is to serve the discipline of aquatic veterinary medicine in enhancing aquatic animal health and welfare, public health, and seafood safety in support of the veterinary profession, aquatic animal owners and industries, and other stakeholders.

To fulfill this Mission the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association has established the following Objectives:

  • To serve aquatic veterinary medicine practitioners of many disciplines and backgrounds by developing programs to support and sustain members, and the aquatic species industries that they serve.
  • To identify, foster and strengthen professional interactions among aquatic medical practitioners and other organizations around the world.
  • To be an advocate for, develop guidance on, and promote the advancement of the science, ethics, and professional aspects of aquatic animal medicine within the veterinary profession and a wider audience.
  • To optimally position and advance the discipline of aquatic veterinary medicine, and support the practice of aquatic veterinary medicine in all countries.
  • See www.wavma.org/about-WAVMA.

An essential part of WAVMA’s mission is communication and in the modern world this means using multiple platforms and concepts.  E-news is accessible to all members and non-members who have a registered WAVMA Profile, see www.wavma.org/Become-a-member to become a member, registering for a monthly live webinar www.wavma.org/WebCEPD is the easiest to just create a WAVMA profile, and all you want to receive is the E-news. Blogs are available to all on www.wavma.org/blog.

The concept is to send out two emails per month via e-news with an accompanying longer article placed on the blog page.

What might you expect? One email a month indicating current WAVMA activities and other activities of interest to our members. One email a month on a "Focus" topic the first of which is One Health. Each Focus will run for several months.

How can you contribute? Send information you would like posted to administrators@wavma.org, for the e-news this would be a short paragraph, one photo and any weblinks. Longer articles can also be used and posted on the blog page with the e-news informing members of a new post. If you submit an article for the blog, the administrators can summarize it to make it useable for e-news. Photos can also be edited if necessary to the correct format. Both the e-news and the blog are publicly available.

WAVMA's aim? To inform members of association events and stimulate discussion on topics of importance to WAVMA.

Example e-news

To start a discussion on One Health (you can post any comments to Members-L or Students-L if a member):

The above photo is taken from, "The concept of health in One Health and some practical implications for research and education: what is One Health?” Henrik Lerner, Charlotte Berg. Infection Ecology and Epidemiology 2015, 5: 25300 -http://dx.doi.org/10.3402/iee.v5.25300 an open access paper providing a good introduction to One Health.

A current definition of One Health is provided by the One Health Commission.
