Presentation Synopsis:

Trauma is a common cause of sea turtle injury and mortality. The ability to effectively treat wounds depends on several variables including the cause, the tissues involved, severity and the time elapsed since the injury. The webinar aims to explain in detail the management of wounds in sea turtles and in particular the treatment of skull injuries with exposure of the brain and of the entangled flippers.

Presentation Learning Objectives:

  1. diagnose injury severity in sea turtles
  2. diagnostic imaging in the management of injuries
  3. proper wound management in entangled flipper and head injury

Speaker Bio:

Professor Franchini has been dealing with sea turtle medicine and surgery for more than 10 years. In addition to teaching veterinary surgery, she teaches marine fauna management techniques at the University of Bari and at the Master in Conservation medicine of aquatic animals at the University of Padua. The main fields of research and interest of Professor Franchini are the management of severe wounds, neurological lesions, entanglement, systemic gas embolism, respiratory diseases, diagnostic imaging and anesthesia in sea turtles proven by several scientific publications on these topics.
