John Pitts Financial Support Programme for Aquatic Veterinary Students and Graduates

The World A quatic Veterinary Medical Association (WAVMA) will provide several awards to veterinary students and recent graduates of veterinary medicine who are interested in exploring a career in aquatic veterinary medicine. Applications generally open in February or March each year, and awards are announced in May/June.

For 2015, applications will be accepted from veterinary students currently enrolled, or recent graduates (within the last 2 years) of any nationally recognized veterinary school or college throughout the world, that awards a degree allowing the person to practice veterinary medicine.
Funding from these awards can be used for a variety of aquatic veterinary educational opportunities, including attending workshops or meetings, externships or internships, or to support aquatic veterinary research projects (see below for more details). These activities or projects must be completed between May 1, 2015 and April 30, 2016 and a written report is required on completion of the project or activity.

Awards are intended to assist veterinary students and veterinarians, who graduated in the previous 2 years, to become involved in aquatic veterinary medicine. Preference is given to applicants who are likely to pursue a career in a private veterinary practice and provide services to clients.
Awards (generally up to $1,000) are intended to support aquatic veterinary activities and educational opportunities, and may be used towards offsetting personal costs for:
· Travel, accommodation, and/or registration at aquatic veterinary conferences, symposia and other continuing education and professional development (CEPD) meetings; including on-line aquatic CEPD
· Travel, accommodation, and other activities directly associated with veterinary student externships that expose individuals to clinical aquatic veterinary medicine
· Equipment and supplies needed for aquatic veterinary research projects not funded by other financial sources

** All individuals who receive an award must provide a written report after completing their activity or project for possible publication in WAVMA’s quarterly publication, The Aquatic Veterinarian, and are encouraged to give a presentation about their scholarship experience to other veterinary students.

Current applications close on May 15, 2015.
