Elasmobranch Medicine 101 - WebCEPD B-1017

This presentation will provide an overview of the elasmobranchs (sharks, skates & rays) which are cartilagenous fish commonly kept in public aquariums. Elasmobranchs are different from teleosts or bony fish, and often require attention by an aquatic veterinarian. This presentation will cover unique anatomy and physiology of elasmobranchs, some research addressing artificial reproduction, and will discuss some common problems seen in captive elasmobranchs and wild shark rescues.

Learning Objectives - Participants will understand:

1. elasmobranch anatomy and how it differs from teleosts;

2. elasmobranch physiology and reproduction;

3. some shark medical issues and treatments.

About the Speaker:

Since 1999 Dr. Jones has been working within the aquarium world. He is a consultant to all the public aquariums in Australia and New Zealand and more recently internationally. Commencing in 2003, he organized a research team working on artificial reproduction in sharks, which culminated in the first shark born in March 2014 that was conceived through artificial insemination. He has also developed

the world’s first online course for aquarists and others working in the aquarium and zoo industry (the e-quarist course) that was launched in May 2011 and now has students on five continents.
